Stock of Materials: The Importance of Planning for Down Time and Having Resources Available

Two of the most dedicated workers you will find at Merkle International are Amanda and Kari, Buyers in the Purchasing & Shipping department. Their jobs keep them busy since Merkle International has a worldwide clientele. They work with business partners across America and around the globe, including the Czech Republic, India, Vietnam, and China.

One of the products they need to ship is bricks and lots of them.  Merkle is known for supplying high-quality refractory systems and related equipment for high-temperature furnaces that could exceed 2000 degrees F.  The bricks used in these furnaces must meet unique technical specifications, which can make their creation an expensive process.  Because Merkle clients are located worldwide, the furnace components usually need to be shipped great distances, but they still need to arrive as soon as possible.  When a furnace goes down, the loss can be steep – as much as hundreds of thousands of dollars a day.  Due to this unique situation, Merkle carries inventory to meet the needs of our customers.  Amanda and Kari are responsible for managing that inventory.

The fact that the furnace components they ship can be expensive must be taken into consideration when it comes to keeping them in stock. Amanda and Kari offer materials selected from a worldwide network of suppliers, and they work to anticipate the needs of their clients as they obtain inventory for future use. They want to be able to offer quality products at a lower rate, so they need to carry enough stock to offer price breaks when ordered in bulk.

Inventory also must be stocked with future emergency orders in mind.  Amanda and Kari are always ready to help if a problem arises and a customer needs guidance to overcome the crisis. In some cases, their actions may prevent a shutdown in production. In doing so, they are helping that customer to stay on schedule, which is a crucial factor.

Together, Amanda and Kari have plenty of professional experience and enjoy meeting challenges as a team. Each workday, they strive to meet the needs of their worldwide industrial clientele.

At Merkle International, our team members look forward to assisting you. Be sure to contact us if you have any questions and would like to learn more.
