Modu-Lok Basics

Merkle International, Inc. supplies structures made using the proprietary Merkle Modu-Lok system. The Modu-Lok system utilizes pre-fired refractory shapes along with metallic hangers and structural steel for support.  The pre-fired refractory provides a lining of uniform density and the hanger and filled brick have structural, load bearing treads on all four sides. Additionally, support brick is placed on 8-inch or 12-inch centers providing versatility in design. Different sized standard bricks allow for various working lining and insulation options.

Modu-Lok Suspended Roof

The Modu-Lok system advances the design of roofs for high-temperature applications ranging from chemical incineration to glass making; from metals smelting to mineral processing. The structural treads allow this flexibility—providing durable linings with maximum insulation coverage. With hangers on 8-inch centers, the Modu-Lok roof allows for 75% insulation coverage; with hangers on 12-inch centers, that coverage is 84%. Two parent shapes are often used to build the complete roof—often with a complex configuration.

The Merkle fiberglass electric melter roof is normally comprised of the hanger and filler brick, mortar, insulating castable, M203 hanger brick clips, junior beams (often S3 beams) and M303 Flange-Lok beam clips.  The Merkle Modu-Lok design locks metallics on both support brick and steel structures. Metallics are clear of insulation, which adds to service life. Additionally, metallics can be made as stampings or castings in materials to suit particular applications.   Merkle is capable of augmenting the standard the scope of supply to include the major beams, or when technically feasible, can decrease the standard scope to allow for local procurement of S3 beams.

Modu-Lok Entrance Lintels

Modu-Lok lintel construction provides an integral hanging curtain at the feed opening, utilizing standard Merkle parts.  The high-quality, pre-fired refractory makes a sturdy, rugged curtain at the entrance.  Thanks to the flexible Modu-Lok design and many years’ experience, we can custom design a lintel that will work for you, at minimal cost increase.

Roof Openings

Fiberglass electric melter roofs normally require openings for backup feed systems, thermal imaging and/or gas and exhaust.  Merkle can integrate these openings within the structure using simple cast openings or more complex bricked openings.  The support steel designs allow access to these openings, while giving structural support to the roof.  In some cases, the ancillary equipment loading is placed on the Merkle beams.
